History of LBS
- 1948 – Nautical and Engineering College setup in rented barracks near V.T.
- 1965 – shifted to present location at Hay Bunder post-sea training for both nautical engineering disciplines
- 1967 – named ‘Lal Bahadur Shastri Nautical Engineering College’ as a token of gratitude for making land available for the present campus.
- 1994 – name upgraded as ‘Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research’.
The Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research is a premier post-sea Maritime Education and Training Institution offering a comprehensive range of courses for Merchant Navy personnel.
Merchant Marine Education and Research Trust (MMERT) has been constituted by Indian ship owners and Foreign ship owners employing Indian officers. This Trust is assisting the Government in funding, including this institution towards the development of maritime education.
The institution is housed in a modern seven-storeyed building situated on a six and half -acre site on the harbour front at Hay Bunder Road, Sewri, Mumbai. The college building and its two adjacent blocks of hostels overlook the picturesque Mumbai harbour with Butcher & Elephanta islands and hills to the East.
The College is about l.5 k.m. from the nearest railway station ‘Reay Road’ on the Harbour line of Central Railway and it is adjacent to Tata Oil Mills. It can be reached by BEST bus Nos. 161, 168 and also by the College bus at routine timings.
Aims & objectives
a) To impart high quality education, to all seafaring professionals both afloat and ashore.
b) To foster the spirit of mutual learning among the trainees and trainers and to stay abreast of the latest innovation in the fast developing field of shipping technology.
c) To conduct long term and short term courses (both COMPETENCY & STCW) in the Nautical & Engineering disciplines.
d) To prepare students for certificate of competency examinations and to conduct periodical tests, examinations, assessments with the objective of evaluation of student performance as well as the effectiveness of training programmes.
e) To provide continuing education for the faculty to improve the quality of teaching.
f) To hold Seminars/Workshops/Conferences to share and disseminate knowledge.
g) To motivate the talent of students and faculty to participate in the different research oriented programmes and projects.
h) To conduct regular programmes in Human Resources Development.
i) To provide specialised training programmes in various subjects such as management, computer applications, marine pollution, marine economics, port & harbour design, quality management, earth science, risk analysis, marine laws, etc.
j) To interact with the shipping industry and provide necessary expertise towards resolving technical problems, understanding and interpretation of latest rules and regulations affecting shipping and to carry out safety related on board training programmes especially during ships stay in port.

Hostel
Limited residential accommodation with boarding facilities is available to the students of this college in the hostel building adjacent to this college. Student lives in the Hostel under the paternal care of a Hostel Warden who reside in the hostel. A new hostel for 250 students is constructed recently. The new block consists of few family accomdation with modern amenities.
Canteen
Canteen facilities exist for the students for both the day scholars and hostel residents. The canteen supplies refreshments, lunch and dinner at reasonable rates.
Recreation
The college aims at providing sports, recreational and social activities to promote all round development of the students. A 2.5 acre play field is available to the students for football, hockey, cricket, basket ball & other outdoor games. Facilities are available in the campus for swimming, indoor games. Gymnasium is also available. The faculty keenly interacts with the students in all extra curricular activities. An auditorium with a seating capacity of about 500 is provided for holding staff and student functions, workshops and seminars.
Administration
The Principal is assisted by Vice-Principals each with a special function. An association of the Teaching Staff and another of the Non-Teaching Staff take care of their respective problems social welfare, mutual relationship etc. Few faculty members are also included in Administrative work.
